Macular Edema treatment in Bonita Springs FL

Macular Edema

Macular edema is swelling of the macula.

Cause

This condition may be caused by a disease such as diabetic retinopathy, uveitis and retinal vascular disease, injury to the eye or recent eye surgery.

Symptoms

You may experience distorted vision (straight lines appear wavy), light sensitivity or blurred central vision.

Diagnosis

A full comprehensive eye exam is required to detect Macular Edema. Along with a complete medical history special pictures will be obtained in order to pinpoint any leakage and the destination that it is coming from. This photography is known as a fluorescein angiogram and an optical coherence tomography scan.

Treatment

Macular edema may be treated by injecting a medication into the eye, this painless procedure works to “mop up” the fluid. On some occasions, an ocular steroid is used. A less invasive approach may be taken in some mild cases which involve treatment by use of topical NSAIDs.

Prevention

Regular eye exams can detect this condition early on to prevent worsening.
